Job Description

 
Who we are:

The Explore Center, Inc. is an organization committed to providing quality science and historic education through museum programming.

 
The mission of the Explore Center, Inc. is to promote science literacy for all ages through science education programming and interactive exhibits in a regional science center.

 
Position Description

The Gulf Coast Exploreum Intern is responsible for enhancing the visitor experience and exhibit interaction by aiding the Floor Educators in delivering high-quality, energetic and informative demonstrations and activities to audiences of all ages.

 
Dates and Compensation

June 3-Aug 31, 2013

Full time: five days, thirty-five hours per week

Compensation: approximately $2,500 per intern

 
Position Responsibilities

·         Reports to Education Department

·         Consistently aid with quality delivery of Discovery Demos, Class Blasts, Field Lessons, Birthday Parties and other educational activities

·         Continually learn new demonstrations ranging across wide topicalities

·         Assist Floor Educators with set-up and perform hands-on science demonstrations, including replenishment of supplies

·         Interns are not responsible for animal handling or chemical handling unless trained

·         Keep demonstration area(s) clean by following a daily routine

·         Uses proper safety equipment during all demonstrations and programs

·         Greet and assist visitors, promote Exploreum programs, events and memberships, etc.

·         Assist with special events, programs, workshops, festivals, camp-ins, camps and other Exploreum functions

·         Use reasoning to define problems, develop solutions, interpret instructions and evaluate information

·         Engage visitors actively with the gallery exhibits while not in formal demonstrations

 
Qualifications

·         Required to work a 35-hour workweek for a consecutive eight-week period

·         Enrolled in a college/university as full time student for the fall of 2013

·         Possess excellent communication and public speaking skills

·         Must be enthusiastic, energetic and motivated

·         Able to work as a part of a team

·         Willingness and dedication to learn new things

·         Desire to take initiative and perform with little supervision

·         Flexible, adaptable and able to learn quickly

·         Experience with dramatic arts, public speaking or science education a plus

·         Possess excellent customer service and interpersonal skills
